When you think you’ve seen it all, along comes something like this.

In order to settle a playground dispute, a Milwaukee woman gave her 16-year-old son a gun, and now three other teenagers are hospitalized with gunshot wounds.

The shooter has been identified, although he is still at large. No surprise here: he has a previous criminal record.

What a sad, pathetic situation. As Mayor Barrett said:

We need parents to be parents, not accomplices.

We have people here who are morally, ethically, culturally, spiritually bankrupt. But I have a feeling this woman stopped being a parent a long time ago, if indeed she ever was one. At least she could bond with her son in being a thug. Momma Thug and Junior Thug. How wonderful.

But this is the culture we’re dealing with in the Central City. The urban. ghetto, hip-hop culture. First reaction is to shoot or attack if you are dissed. After all, you are owed respect. And if someone doesn’t show you the proper respect you think you are owed, you can retaliate in any means you feel necessary to settle the score.

As Chief Edward Flynn observed:

[W]e’re dealing with immature young men who do dumb things. The only problem for us now is they do dumb things with semiautomatic handguns.

That, sad to say, is the case.
