150 years ago today, the War Between the States, a/k/a the Civil War, began with the shots fired upon Fort Sumter by the Confederate States of America. The following day, at the direction of President Lincoln, the commander of Fort Sumter, Maj. Robert Anderson, surrendered the fort to the Confederates under Gen. Pierre Beauregard.
Today, Fort Sumter has been preserved as a National Park. Here’s an image of where the first shots of the Civil War were fired:
