A Nation Of Moochers

Congratulations, America.

Or shall I say, Obamamerica. You have more people on the government dole that people who actually produce things. And yes, people drawing a government paycheck is a moocher, collecting from wealth created by others.

More Americans now work for government than in manufacturing. More Americans work for government than work in construction, farming, fishing, mining, utilities and forestry combined.

We have moved decisively from a nation of makers to a nation of takers. Nearly half of the $2.2 trillion cost of state and local governments is the $1 trillion-a-year tab for pay and benefits of state and local employees. Is it any wonder that so many states and cities cannot pay their bills?

Every state in America today except for two—Indiana and Wisconsin—has more government workers on the payroll than people manufacturing industrial goods. Consider California, which has the highest budget deficit in the history of the states. The not-so Golden State now has an incredible 2.4 million government employees—twice as many as people at work in manufacturing. New Jersey has just under two-and-a-half as many government employees as manufacturers. Florida’s ratio is more than 3 to 1. So is New York’s.

Even Michigan, at one time the auto capital of the world, and Pennsylvania, once the steel capital, have more government bureaucrats than people making things. The leaders in government hiring are Wyoming and New Mexico, which have hired more than six government workers for every manufacturing worker.

Folks, someone has to pay for those government workers, which include bureaucrats and public school teachers. And those are the taxpayers working at the jobs that produce things. And as that number shrinks, more and more is required from each private sector worker in order to maintain the lavish salaries and Rolls Royce benefits of the public sector workers.

And here’s a really depressing chart:

That’s right: more tax money is being transferred into households than is being paid by households. The amount of transfer payments from government is greater than the amount of taxes paid by Americans. We are very close to the point of no return where a majority of Americans will pay nothing in federal taxes and the entire tax burden will be supported by less than 50 percent of Americans.

Keep in mind that the median household income in the United States is about $46,000 according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The top 50 percent of all American households pay 97 percent of all federal income taxes collected. Breaking it down even further, the top 1 percent pays 35 percent of the federal income taxes collected, the top 5 percent pay 55 percent, the top 10 percent pay 66 percent, the top 25 percent pay 84 percent. Just how much is enough?

Breaking news: only the rich in America pay income taxes.

The goal of the socialists and progressives in power is to make the top 50 percent pay 100 percent of all income taxes, or remove 50 percent of Americans from the income tax rolls.

At that point, it’s over. Tax cuts become a political impossibility as demagogues drum up opposition from people who don’t pay taxes out of fear of those transfer payments being cut back.
